Aqua Nor 2025: Twin Tubs offer New Logistics for Salmon

August 27, 2025

This August at Aqua Nor in Trondheim, iTUB and Sæplast launched something we believe will impact salmon transport: Twin Tubs. For the first time, the industry saw a full-service, circular rental system designed to move salmon smarter — reducing costs, cutting CO₂, and dramatically lowering plastic waste.

What We Showed

At stand F-573, our Twin Tubs took center stage. Visitors could see how the tubs nest for return transport, hold ~200 kg of salmon plus ice, and replace 8–10 single-use boxes in every shipment. On screen, we played the story of Arctic Fish in Iceland and Adri & Zoon in the Netherlands — pioneers who proved the system works in real operations, with no difference in fish quality and an 80% reduction in CO₂.

Bragi Smith, iTUB’s Sales Director, also addressed the audience at Aqua Nor:

“We’re not just providing tubs. We’re offering a better way to move salmon — one that fits today’s environmental expectations and tomorrow’s financial realities.”

Why It Matters

The numbers tell the story:

  • 98% less virgin plastic – one Twin Tub replaces ~1,800 EPS boxes over its lifetime.

  • 80% lower CO₂ emissions – confirmed by the University of Iceland LCA.

  • 25–50% lower packaging & freight costs – proven in trials across Iceland, Scotland, and the Netherlands.

  • Up to 50% more salmon per container – higher efficiency, lower waste.

And it’s not just the environment. Partners like Arctic Fish have reported faster packing lines and smoother factory operations when using tubs alongside EPS. Retailers in the UK, including Marks & Spencer, are already demanding reusable packaging in seafood supply chains — and the Salmon Solution is the answer.

The Message We Sent at Aqua Nor

Our message was clear:

  • The industry doesn’t need to fight EPS. The Twin Tub works with existing systems, making logistics more efficient when tubs and boxes are used together.

  • Circular solutions aren’t just a vision for the future. They are here now — proven, tested, and ready to scale.

  • The change is inevitable. If we don’t act, someone else will. But by acting now, we lead.

What Comes Next

Aqua Nor was not the finish line. It was the starting gun. Over the coming months, our team will:

  • Expand pilots across Europe and Americas.

  • Support VAP buyers under increasing retailer and regulatory pressure to move away from single-use packaging.

  • Scale our depot and washing network in Europe to handle growing demand.

A Call to Action

The excitement in Trondheim confirmed it: the salmon industry is ready. Ready to reduce waste, ready to cut emissions, ready to save money — and ready for smarter logistics.

At iTUB, we’re proud to lead this change with our partners. But this is bigger than us. It’s about the entire seafood value chain stepping into a more sustainable, circular future.

The Salmon Solution is here. The future is circular. Will you join us?
