LCA study favors reusable tubs

March 25, 2024

We’re thrilled to share that iTUB has contributed to groundbreaking academic research, highlighting our commitment to sustainability. This Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) study reveals that our reusable tubs significantly reduce environmental impact compared to single-use alternatives. It’s a big step towards a greener future, and we’re proud to be at the forefront of this positive change!

The study highlights the significant threat posed by plastic production and pollution to global ecosystems, with a projection that annual plastic emissions in aquatic ecosystems could triple from 2020 to 2030. Focusing on the food packaging industry, particularly for fresh fish transport, it examines the environmental impacts of using multi-use fish tubs made of polyethylene (PE) and polyurethane (PUR) versus single-use expanded polystyrene (EPS) boxes. Employing life cycle assessment methodology, the study evaluates these packaging solutions for transporting 1000 tons of fresh fish from Iceland to Europe annually. The findings reveal that multi-use PE/PUR tubs have lower environmental impacts compared to single-use EPS boxes, even in the first year of use. Specifically, EPS boxes contribute to 141 tons of CO2-equivalent emissions for transporting 1000 tons of fresh fish, while multi-use solutions range from 4 to 46 tons CO2-eq annually, with the weight and size of the tubs being critical factors in their environmental footprint.
